Train

If you’re going to Hokkaido during the winter season, the train is your go-to transport mode. For unlimited rides on JR trains and some JR buses, snag the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass via Klook (from ~S$174.50) — it’s a special service for foreign visitors, offering coverage on all JR lines in Hokkaido (except the Hokkaido Shinkansen).

*Pro-tip: Check the JR Hokkaido timetable in advance as train schedules can get a bit sparse outside the main cities.

Also, keep in mind that winter blizzards can impact train services. It’s advised to have a backup plan, like highway buses, to keep your travel plans smooth.

You can also opt for other intercity bus operators out of Sapporo such as the JR Hokkaido Bus and Hokkaido Chuo Bus.

Another way to explore Hokkaido is by renting a car. It gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and reach those inaccessible spots that public transport might not cover. You can rent a car via Klook as we did back in our last Hokkaido road trip!

*Note: Hokkaido’s blizzards and icy roads can make driving dangerous, especially if you’re not a seasoned driver in Japan. So do take care and drive carefully on the roads. Safety comes first!
