Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.

When I visited Taiwan with my friends, I realised that it would be a great place to take the entire family to one day. I found it safe, super easy to get around, and packed with exciting things to do — no matter the age.

Plus, it has everything my family would want out of a trip: I love visiting scenic nature spots, my siblings are fond of night markets, and my niece enjoys theme parks. It got me wondering: what else is there to do in Taiwan with the family?

With that, I rounded up 13 family-friendly things to do in Taiwan, covering all the must-see-eat-do’s that make it an unforgettable family trip.

In my opinion, the best way to explore Taiwan is by flying to Taipei first! Most international flights land here, and it has easy access to many city attractions and nature getaways.

Flights from Singapore to Taipei usually take around ~4.5 hours… just long enough where comfort can make all the difference. So be well-rested for your trip by choosing an airline known for its spacious cabins, comfortable in-flight experience and great service — like EVA Air!

Jiufen Town - Travelling Around Taiwan

Did you even visit Taiwan if you didn’t go to Jiufen and Shifen? What were once mining towns are now a popular day trip destination from Taipei, where you’ll get to experience a slice of old-world Taiwan.

The sights of Jiufen are made even prettier thanks to lit lanterns along the streets and traditional teahouses overlooking the sea. But it holds a more meaningful significance for us millennials and older Gen Z’ers, as it’s said to have inspired scenes from a childhood classic: Spirited Away (2001).

Yehliu Geopark is home to many unusual rock formations shaped by thousands of years of wind and sea erosion.

It feels like walking through a museum sculpted by Mother Earth herself, with many quirky natural formations to admire. Perhaps the most iconic one is the Queen’s Head (pictured below), which resembles a bust of Queen Elizabeth.

This place has tons of things to do for the entire family: rent a bike and ride along the lake trail, hop on a ferry to visit the nearby villages, or like us, go stand-up paddle boarding.

Rides at Formosan Cultural Village - Taiwan Itinerary

For a bird’s-eye view of the lake and forested hills, ride the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway, a colourful gondola that takes you to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. This unique theme park blends both showcases of culture, and strangely enough, thrilling rides.

But for a change of pace, walk through their European-style gardens, or take on one of the many amusement park rides. They even have something similar to Disneyland’s Space Mountain, except this one doesn’t go as fast (a.k.a. it’s good for kids, too)!

Go street food-hopping with the family to taste some Michelin-recognised delicacies like the Fuzhou Black Pepper Bun (juicy seasoned pork and scallions in a bun) and the Chen Dong Pork Ribs Medicinal Herbs Soup.

Other notable dishes to try are broths with oyster vermicelli, and different-flavoured mochi.

Taipei’s art scene is booming, with quirky museums and immersive art shows popping up all over the city — but nothing captures its imaginative energy quite like Huashan 1914 Creative Park.

Among the many stylish cafes and graffiti-covered warehouses here, they hold exhibits that change quite frequently. Check out their Facebook and Instagram pages to see if there’s anything your children will like!

For example, we chanced upon a Mickey Mouse-themed pop-up during our trip back in 2023, where we got to view artworks depicting the history of Disney’s iconic character.

12) Soak in the views from the Little Great Wall

Girl hiking the Little Great Wall on Green Island - Taiwan Itinerary

Dramatic coastal landscapes and scuba diving may not be the first things you think of when you hear “Taiwan”, but a trip to Green Island will surprise you in the best way possible.

It’s small enough that you can drive around the entire island for 45 minutes, but its entire vicinity is nothing short of scenic.

Perhaps the most iconic landmark here is the Little Great Wall, an homage to one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Haishenping at Green Island

But it’s definitely an easier “trek” than its giant counterpart in China, so parents and children can take on the climb with ease. Walking up its gentle 400m trail is rewarding as you’ll be greeted by an epic view of Taiwan’s eastern coastline at the top.

It’s also a great place to peep rock formations and catch the sunrise!

*Pro-tip: Car rentals are less common to get around the island (people usually rent a scooter), so it’s best to contact your accommodation on the island to help you secure one.

Entrance fee: Free
Opening hours: 24hrs
Address: Lvdao Township, Taitung County, Taiwan 951
How to get there: Take a ferry from Fugang Fishing Harbor in Taitung to Nanliao Fishing Harbor. Ride a scooter for 20mins (Google Maps)

13) Go on a whale and dolphin-watching tour from Hualien

Eastern Taiwan Itinerary - Yilan turtle island dolphin-watching

Head to Taiwan’s East Coast for a chance to see wild whales and dolphins in their natural habitat!

Several tours are available throughout the year, with boats departing from Hualien. If you’re lucky like us, you’ll get to see various species of these giant marine creatures jumping and splashing around the waters.
