Held in conjunction with Light to Night and Singapore Art Week, VERSE 2025 invites everyone to explore the transformative power of literary art. Presented by Arts House Limited, VERSE celebrates the diversity of Singapore literature with captivating, multi-sensory experiences. 

The Arts House at the Old Parliament will be teeming with a diverse program featuring readings, workshops, exhibitions, and performances that showcase the best of Singaporean literature. 

One of the highlights will be an art installation titled “A Little Bead of Work”, an interactive installation that features thousands of glow-in-the-dark alphabet beads spread across nine shallow planter beds. Visitors are welcomed to string together words and create friendship bracelets for each other.

4) 5 Albizias — Learn more about trees at a travelling exhibition

There’s a travelling exhibition that’s currently making its way through Singapore’s heartlands. “5 Albizias”, by artist Robert Zhao Renhui, is an exhibition that focuses on the Albizia tree (Albizia Moluccana) — a resilient and fast-growing species native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. These trees have quietly spread across Singapore’s urban landscape, thriving in unexpected places. 

Through stunning photography, captivating videos and thought-provoking text, Zhao explores the fascinating story of these “migrant” trees, inviting visitors to ponder the delicate balance between nature and the urban environment. 

“5 Albizias” is currently being showcased at Punggol Regional Library until 2 February, and will be popping up at different regional libraries across Singapore.

This newly launched showcase celebrates the lives and works of three remarkable Indonesian women: Nyonya Oeij Seon King, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono.

The exhibition highlights the evolution of Peranakan batik over time and explores the role of nyonyas as entrepreneurs and cultural ambassadors, who have helped to preserve and promote Peranakan heritage. Among the exhibited pieces include carefully preserved heritage batik pieces that were painstakingly handpainted by Nyonya Oeij Seon King, and labourously coloured using natural dyes. 

If you can’t wait to check out the exhibition, here’s a fun little quiz that you can do to discover your batik style! At the end of the quiz, you can even redeem a souvenir featuring a unique batik-inspired illustration.

From 1 November, MRT trains in Singapore are transformed into a moving library of local poetry, offering commuters a great way to discover local literature on their journeys.

Over 100 English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil poems are showcased on the trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines. To make the experience even more immersive, local artists have created special videos featuring local poets, which you can catch on both trains and MRT stations.

Between 1 November and 31 December 2024, the public can also participate in the Poems on the MRT Bingo Competition. Simply download a digital copy of the bingo card, photograph three poems on the MRT panels that fit the card’s categories and upload your submission. Titled Teo Eng Seng: We’re Happy. Are you Happy?, this exhibition celebrates Teo’s profound impact on the Singapore art scene. Best known for his experimentation with various mediums and his very own invention of “paperdyesculp” (a mix-material papier-mâché), Teo transforms everyday materials into vibrant works of art.

Everyday Practices draws inspiration from Taiwanese-born performance artist Tehching Hsieh’s work. “One Year Performance 1978–1979” depicts Hsieh confining himself in a small, self-constructed cell for a year alone, without conversing, reading, writing, listening to the radio or watching the TV.

Through Everyday Practices, visitors can witness how ordinary actions can become powerful expressions of resilience in the face of hardship. Additionally, the exhibition will feature a range of programs and activities that encourage thoughtful discussions based on SAM’s collection.

The National Museum of Singapore may be undergoing upgrading works but parts of it are still open to visitors! Behind the colourful hoardings is a new toy-themed exhibition titled Play:Date – Unlocking Cabinets of Play.

The exhibition is open to the public from 5 July 2024, and it showcases a collection of artworks and toys collectables by local artists and collectors. The external hoardings are decorated with large-scale artworks from five local artists, taking visitors through the life cycle of toys and evoking personal memories along the way. There are some interactive parts on the hoardings, so be sure to look out for those!

Inside the museum, you’ll see iconic vintage toys such as the collectables from McDonald’s Happy Meals. You might even spot familiar toys that you had from the nineties! There are 250 toys displayed with stories on their origins and their collectors’ journeys in toy-collecting.

28) Self-service Comics Library in West Coast Community Centre

Japanese manga and Western comic fans unite! Previously located at Anchorpoint Mall, the Comics Library has popped up once again, but now at West Coast Community Centre.

Similarly, it carries a diverse collection of comics, graphic novels, and manga in English, as well as Chinese, Malay and Tamil! Not to mention, there’s a dedicated children’s collection for the young ones. To borrow the books, just use the NLB Mobile app 📕

A special feature of this library though is the StoryGen area, where visitors can put a spin on classic stories using generative AI. That’s right, you’ll be able to personalise your own narrative adventure by customising your location, main characters and ending! Then, watch it all unfold on the screens.

Do note that you’ll need to register your Passion Card (CAN)/EZ-Link via this link to enter the library. Registration is free and it’ll be approved by the staff within three working days. But don’t worry if you’ve forgotten to pre-register, walk-ins are welcomed — just head to the front desk!

The display at the Cloud Forest features a traditional Bahay Kubo stilt house, surrounded by over 40 types of orchids. 31) S.E.A Aquarium Now Offers introductory and PADI-AWARE Dive Programmes

You don’t have to travel out of Singapore to take your first dive. S.E.A Aquarium now offers PADI Discover Scuba Diving (from S$319) designed for non-divers aged 10 years and above — so you don’t need a dive license! 🤿

The session begins with a theory class to familiarise yourself with the equipment and know basic diving skills like how to equalise to the water pressure — pay attention as there’s a quiz at the end. Then it’s time to put your wetsuits on and head to the tank.
