Here are some fun things to do in Malacca for your next weekend getaway — less than 1 hour away from Singapore!
I have never visited Malacca before, mainly because I was unsure of what to do there and always thought the only way to get there was by car, which I don’t have.
But recently, Scoot launched a new direct flight to Malacca, making it easier and quicker. So I jumped at the chance to visit this short getaway from Singapore, which is now just a quick flight less than an hour away instead of the usual 3.5-hour car ride.
I knew Malacca was famous for its food, but I didn’t realise what else the state had to offer. However, after my recent trip, my perspective completely changed. There’s so much more to the city than just its delicious dishes, and it’s definitely a place worth exploring.
Here are five activities you can do in Malacca on your next short getaway!
1) Catch a performance in a rotating auditorium at Encore Melaka
Encore Melaka is a fun and exciting show that takes you through the history and culture of Malacca. The highlight is the 360° rotating auditorium, which gives you a unique view of the performances from every angle — NGL, I thought I was tripping when I saw the auditorium move!
It’s a great way to learn about the city’s history while enjoying lively music, vibrant dancing, and stunning visuals.
*Pro-tip: Go for the 5:30PM show, and right after it ends, you’ll catch a beautiful sunset just outside!
Cost: RM158/adult (~S$47) for a 1hr 10mins show
Show times: Varies
How to get there: 20min drive from Jonker Street (Google Maps)
2) Explore the iconic Dutch Square
Dutch Square in Malacca is a must-visit spot, with its iconic red buildings and historical landmarks.
It’s home to the famous Stadthuys, the oldest Dutch building in Southeast Asia, at around 383 years old. It also features the Christ Church, which is the oldest functioning protestant church in Malaysia. I probably spent the most time here, taking photos and simply soaking in the colonial vibe.
Another activity you can do here is hop on one of the colourful trishaws parked right outside Christ Church and take a fun ride around town! Prices start from RM25 per trishaw (~S$8) for 15 minutes!
Opening hours: 24hrs
How to get there: 5min walk from Jonker Street (Google Maps)
3) Escape to Port Dickson
Unwind at Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson
Located about a 1.5-hour drive from Malacca, Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson is a popular resort with unique overwater villas shaped like a hibiscus flower. The spacious rooms come with private pools, making it a perfect place to relax.
Whether you’re enjoying the views, lounging by the pool, or making the most of the resort’s activities like riding an ATV or cruising on a banana boat, it’s a peaceful spot for a getaway with family or friends.
I had a wonderful time at Lexis Hibiscus — enjoying my own private pool with an ocean view, all in complete peace and privacy. The resort also offers a complimentary buggy service to get around, and to my surprise, it was incredibly fast. I just called reception, and within minutes, someone was at my door to pick me up.
Cost: From RM800/night (~S$241) (up to 4 pax)
How to get there: 1.5hr drive from Jonker Street (Google Maps)
Catch the sunset along the Malacca Straits
Fun fact: The Malacca Strait is one of the busiest and most important shipping routes in the world and it stretches about 805km long!
The best way to explore it is on a Dickson Dragon Sunset Cruise in Port Dickson. As the boat sails along the coast, enjoy a fun karaoke session or relax in the “saltwater jacuzzi” — a netted area where you can soak in the seawater while watching the beautiful sunset.
I got to enjoy the cool sea breeze and an unobstructed sunset view, which is something I don’t usually get in Singapore. It was really peaceful and relaxing, especially as I had a heart-to-heart with my new onboard friends.
*Note: Do book at least 1 day before the sailing date to avoid any disappointments!
Cost: RM88/adult (~S$26)
Opening hours: 6PM – 7:30PM
Pick-up point: Lexis Hibiscus Hotel Lobby (Google Maps)
4) Sail along the Malacca River
The Melaka River Cruise is a chill and fun way to see the city from the water. You’ll float past cool historic buildings, bridges, and colourful walls, giving you a different view of Malacca. It’s especially nice in the evening when the lights come on, making everything look really pretty.
One of the highlights of my cruise was seeing how the shops on both sides of the river were distinctly different.
On the left, there were bars, and on the right, cafes. The locals joked that one side was “Halal” (referring to the cafes, which are more family-friendly and alcohol-free) and the other “Haram” (referring to the bars, where alcohol is served).
*Note: You can head to the jetty to book a cruise slot on the spot, with a ride frequency every 30 minutes!
Cost: From RM38/pax for a 45min cruise
Opening hours: 9AM – 11:30PM
Pick-up point: Taman Rempah Jetty (Google Maps) or Muara Sungai Jetty (Google Maps)
5) Bonus: Take a stroll down Jonker Street
Jonker Street is a lively mix of old and new. As a Gen Z who loves everything aesthetic, each shop had this perfect vintage vibe that instantly reminded me of my favourite hangout spot, Joo Chiat.
During the day, you can check out antiques, souvenirs, and local crafts, but there are also modern places like cafes and quirky hippie stores.

In Malacca over the weekend? Be sure to visit the night market on Jonker Street. You’ll find plenty of food stalls with delicious Malaysian street food like carrot cake and stays!
I didn’t get a chance to visit the night market since I went to Malacca during the weekdays, but I’d love to check it out next time I’m there.
Opening hours: 10AM – 6PM
How to get there: 5min walk from Dutch Square (Google Maps)
Travelling to and around Malacca
Flight: Scoot is currently the only airline offering direct flights from Singapore to Malacca, with a quick 50-minute journey. This was recently launched on 23 October 2024 and on a new aircraft too! Unlike the usual Scoot planes, this aircraft is more compact but its comfortable 2-by-2 seating layout makes it feel surprisingly spacious despite its smaller size.
Flights are available every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays, so you have plenty of options for a quick getaway to Malacca, whether you’re planning a weekday break or a weekend escape.
Local transport: The heart of Malacca, where main tourist spots like Jonker Street and Dutch Square are located, is best explored on foot as most attractions are within walking distance.
However, if you plan to travel to the outskirts like Encore Melaka, we recommend using Grab as your main mode of transport — it’s more convenient! Other options include renting a car, arranging transportation through your hotel, or joining a local tour where knowledgeable guides can take you around and share the highlights of the area.
Connection: To stay connected throughout your trip, consider using an eSIM in Malaysia. It’s a hassle-free way to get online without the need for a physical SIM card.
Explore a different side of Malacca on your next short getaway!
With its blend of stunning cultural and historical buildings, along with fun activities to do, Malacca offers much more than just a place to eat and shop. A bonus is that there are plenty of picture-perfect spots to spice up your Instagram.
Next time you’re in Malacca, be sure to check out the places I’ve shared — I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I did!
