Here are the best things to do in Sutera Mall, a lesser-known shopping and dining hub with 500 food and retail shops.

Singaporeans frequently head to popular JB shopping malls like City Square, KSL, Paradigm, and Mid Valley Southkey for shopping, dining, and wellness. Today, we’re shining the spotlight on a lesser-known gem: Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama, a quieter alternative brimming with great food and trendy retail outlets.
Getting to Sutera Mall

Sutera Mall is located in the Skudai suburb, about a half an hour’s drive from JB Sentral. It’s not the typical go-to mall for most day-trippers to JB as it is a bit farther than most malls. Yet, Skudai is gaining popularity as a less crowded alternative for shopping and dining.
You can also easily get to Sutera Mall from JB Sentral on a GrabCar, with a one-way fare of approximately ~RM24.

And even if you don’t drive, there are Causeway Link bus services that operate bus routes from Jurong East Bus Terminal and CIQ 2nd Link (Johor) to Sutera Mall. The bus fare for a one-way journey is ~S$6 (SG to MY) or ~RM6 (MY to SG).

Fun Experiences in Sutera Mall
1) RUD Karting

Most people do not associate shopping malls with adrenaline-pumping adventures, but if you have a need for speed, Sutera Mall’s indoor karting experience packs a load of fun and excitement.
Located inside the mall’s car park is RUD Karting, a racing circuit with karts that go up to 70km/hr in speed.
Thrill-seeking adults can race their friends on the high-speed 400m track, while young racers can get their hands on the wheel on a specially designed kids’ track.

And since it’s indoors, the fun never stops — rain or shine!

There’s also a spacious cafe, The Rud Cafe & Bistro, where you can enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee after an electrifying race.
Cost: From RM75/10-min session (~S$23)
Opening hours: 11AM – 12AM, closes 2AM on Sat
How to get there: Level 2 of Sutera Mall’s East Carpark
2) Behind the Wall Art Street

Located on the ground floor of Sutera Mall is Behind the Wall, a vibrantly painted art street with great purpose. Aside from being perfect for photo-taking, it’s also where you’ll learn about the mall’s sustainability efforts.

Some of the walls are murals done by local school kids, while others feature artwork and artistic styles of renowned artists such as Marta Minujin and Yayoi Kusama.

There’s even a corner to drop off recyclables such as food-grade glass bottles and reusable items like books, electronic items, and toys.

Opening hours: 10AM – 10PM
How to get there: Behind the Wall is located next to Entrance G of Sutera Mall (Google Maps)
3) DARUMA

If you’re a fan of gachapon, you’ll love DARUMA. This store has more than 50 different gachapon machines, including characters from Disney, Sanrio, Pokémon, and popular anime characters. No surprise where I spent all my spare change.🙃

There are token-changing machines, so you don’t have to worry about not having enough coins for the machines.
Cost: RM5 per token (~S$1.50); each game ranging between 3 to 6 tokens
Opening hours: 10:30AM – 10:30PM

4) Hong Kong Street

Akin to the Bugis Street of Singapore, Hong Kong Street in Sutera Mall has stores selling affordable trendy clothes and fashion accessories. And much like Bugis Street, stores here seem to cater to the younger teenage crowd.

In addition to apparel stores, there’s a mobile phone accessory shop, a perfumery and scent shop, a big arcade, and a shop selling POPMART and figurines.

The area is also decorated to look like Hong Kong, complete with its iconic neon signs.

6) Nite Bite Food Street

Sutera Mall’s newest wing is an air-conditioned food corner with select F&B establishments that operate until midnight.
Known as “Nite Bite“, this food-centric corner only opened in January 2024, so if you ever find yourself running out of supper spots in JB, Sutera Mall is a great alternative.

With a total of eight F&B establishments, Nite Bite caters to all late-night cravings. You’ll find a variety of cuisines, from a comforting bowl of noodles to delightful gelato for those with a sweet tooth. They are:
– Ban Tian Yao Grilled Fish

– Veelato
– ZUS Coffee

How to get there: Level 2 of Sutera Mall. Accessible via the side entrance next to Restaurant Pekin Sutera (Google Maps)
7) Veelato

Veelato is a gelato ice cream shop located within the Nite Bite food street of Sutera Mall. It’s the only branch in Malaysia, so we’d say trying their desserts is worth the visit.
After a quick round of taste tests, we settled on the pistachio and Lotus Biscoff, both rich in flavour with just the right creaminess. A set of two scoops of gelato ice cream with a Belgian waffle costs ~RM28 (only ~S$7.60 on Klook!).

Our favourite spot in the ice cream shop is the table next to the storefront, beautifully decorated with a gelato wall. Snap some shots and enjoy your gelato and people-watch at the same time.
Cost: From ~S$7.60 for a set of two scoops + waffle via Klook
Opening hours: 10:30AM – 12AM
8) Verbena

Verbena is a hugely popular bakery in Malaysia and a pride of Johor, as seen by the long queues that frequently form outside its branch in Sutera Mall.
Hailing from the Kulai region, it didn’t take long for Verbena to expand to the bustling city with its wide range of affordable breads and pastries.

Some cult favourites include the cheesecakes and scones, which are freshly made daily, as are the rest of their delicious pastries.

Bonus: Sutera Square

Just a stone’s throw away from Sutera Mall is Sutera Square, a cluster of shop lot offices with a huge variety of F&B offerings.
*Pro-tip: It’s also where the open-air car park is, so you can easily park your vehicle here if you’re driving to B.
9) Euro Fun Park — Roving Carnival at Sutera Square (till 6 Apr 2025)

Sutera Mall and its surroundings, particularly Sutera Square, are known to host exciting and engaging events. That includes month-long fiestas like the travelling fun fair Euro Fun Park, which will be anchored at Sutera Square until 6 April 2025.
It’s the largest roving amusement park in Malaysia and features carnival rides imported from Europe. Some of the iconic rides include the Euro Wheel Ferris wheel and Space Flyer that soars up to 3m in the sky.

Thrill rides aside, it also has family-friendly rides and carnival games. So do catch it if you’re visiting JB before 6 April! Don’t worry if you miss Euro Fun Park at Sutera Square, as it travels around different Malaysian states and will likely return to JB in the future.

We tried the Signature Soy Beancurd (RM16) that comes with toppings of peach gum, snow nest, mixed taro balls, grass jelly and ginko. The syrup was served on the side so we could adjust the sweetness level to our liking.

We also tried the Rose & Lychee Soy Beancurd (RM17), which was light, refreshing, and fragrant.

Travel to Johor Bahru seamlessly in 2025

Getting to JB: It’s now easier than ever to travel to JB from Singapore. Multiple land entry points (Woodlands Causeway, Tuas Second Link, and even via the KTM Shuttle Tebrau train) give people more ways to enter JB. Besides, Singapore passport holders can enter via the E-gates at JB customs, cutting down on the hassle it takes to get through immigration.
Get an eSIM: To ensure your trip is even more seamless, get an eSIM (from S$0.75/day) via Klook to stay connected.
Getting around JB: GrabCar is a good way to get around JB, and you can simply use your existing Grab account in JB.
Paying in JB: Cash is widely accepted. Shops in shopping malls accept VISA and MasterCard payments too. To save on credit card transaction fees and high FX rates, we recommend using multi-currency debit cards such as YouTrip or Revolut. Alternatively, you can download the Touch ‘n Go app and pay with the in-app e-wallet at stores that accept Touch ‘n Go.
