As a naive first-timer, I expected my Bali trip to be a totally relaxing one. It was voted the Happiest Tourist Destination in the World after all… so imagine the whiplash I felt when researching where to stay in Bali turned out to be overwhelmingly stressful.
I realised that Bali wasn’t just one big kumbaya beach party. Each part of the island has a unique vibe and various accommodation types that cater to different travellers, which made the decision-making process a lot harder.

Luxury: Plataran Canggu Bali Resort & Spa
As someone who loves luxury and basking in quietness, Plataran Canggu is the villa I enjoyed staying at the most in South Bali. Nestled among the green paddy fields and away from the city centre, it was the perfect place to end an exhilarating trip.
The highlight of my stay at Plataran (aside from the massage session at their spa) was their superb hospitality. They left a personalised message on our bed, surprised us with a fruit basket, and always offered us a buggy ride to our room even if it was just a 1-minute walk from the lobby.

10) Lovina (North Bali) — for hidden gems
Lovina is an area in North Bali known for dolphin-watching and black sand beaches. But it also has activities you may not know about, like canyoning in Gitgit Waterfall, trekking the Hidden Canyon, or exploring the rich marine life on Menjangan Island.
The more curious adventurers looking for where to stay in Bali will appreciate what Lovina has to offer. If you’re exploring North Bali, it’s the most ideal place to book a hotel or villa since there’s a wider selection here compared to surrounding areas.
Budget: Hotel Shri Ganesh

The quaint Hotel Shri Ganesh in Lovina is a family-run accommodation that offers Balinese-style bungalows. They exemplify “simplicity at its finest”, and offer a relaxing retreat from the city.

It’s only 100m from the beach — swimming isn’t allowed in that area though — but they do have a pool for guests to splash around in. Before checking out, make sure you try their well-loved massage service.

Despite having “beach club” in its name, Lovina Beach Club & Resort is actually a pretty lowkey but homey accommodation that makes it suitable for newlyweds on their honeymoon. It has direct access to the beach and an infinity pool to spend an intimate afternoon together.
But singles like myself can still enjoy their amenities, such as a swing facing the ocean for that perfect main character moment.
The suites have comfortable beds and spacious open-air bathrooms which I liked since I had to bunk with a roomie. Their breakfast buffet also served some bomb pineapple pancakes! 🥞

It takes guts to name your resort after the place where it’s located and call it a day. But I’ll give The Lovina Bali a pass since it’s a stunning luxury resort that encapsulates the beauty of North Bali.
It’s nestled on Lovina Beach, so you’re only one check-in away from water activities and beachfront dining. Aside from a great location, guests have commended The Lovina for its hospitable staff who would proactively check if you need anything.

11) Jimbaran (South Bali) — for staycationers

If you’re craving a laidback vacation but you’re still torn about where to stay in Bali, then consider the coastal town of Jimbaran. Located just south of Kuta, it’s a relatively calm place compared to other parts of Bali.
With a beautiful shoreline and countless seafood restaurants for you to try, it’s perfect for a more intimate vacation with loved ones.

Jimbaran has many luxury accommodation, but The Xotic Bali is a great no-nonsense option for budget travellers. Their rooms are simple and clean with all the things you need. They even come with a fridge, which is surprising since not many hotels within this budget range offer that!

Location-wise, it is at the centre of everything which is great if you’re exploring the town via motorbike. It’s 3km away from Jimbaran Beach, and only a 6-min drive to the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.

12) Candidasa and Eastern Bali — for a quiet nature getaway

Candidasa and Eastern Bali are far away from the places most first-time travellers usually visit. However, it still has beautiful natural attractions that Bali is known for, such as rice terraces, beaches, and mountains.
This part of the island also has water palaces like the Tirta Gangga, and an underwater garden with sunken sculptures to explore. So if you’re wondering where to stay in Bali as a first-timer, don’t count this out!
Budget: Ocean Villa Dive Resort — Tulamben

If you can’t get enough of snorkelling and scuba diving, then Ocean Villa Dive Resort – Tulamben will curb that craving while giving you a rad accommodation to boot.
It’s a place that welcomes all guests alike, whether you’re a dive master or not. The resort staff will happily assist you with your diving needs — from casual marine sightseeing, or PADI diving courses.

They boast a team of Sidemen locals who know the place like the back of their hands, so booking a tour with them is a must!

Choosing Where to Stay in Bali
Finding the perfect accommodation for your Bali trip can be a daunting task with so many options available. But I recommend really taking the time to do your research because it can make or break your trip.
Where you stay also depends on what you plan to do in Bali. For example, my Bali trip was with two adventure junkies and a wellness enthusiast like myself. So we made sure to include Lovina in our Bali itinerary to explore hidden gems, and a day trip to Ubud to do the more spiritual activities. In the end, everyone was happy!
Another thing we considered when looking for where to stay in Bali is the activities that the accommodation offers. So we’d always have something to look forward to after a tiring day. Whether it’s a cooking class or a yoga sesh, you’d have to experience these activities at least once as a first-timer.
Not all of them are complimentary though, so we hit up Klook for value-for-money “resort packages”. On top of an overnight or weekend stay in a resort of your choosing, they’d usually throw in a free or discounted activity as well.
In our case, we booked Plataran Canggu’s staycation package which included a free spa treatment. It was the best decision we could’ve made to finish off our trip since we all went home in a state of relaxation — which in my opinion, should be the lingering feeling a trip to Bali should give you!
