So you’ve packed your bags (maybe mentally), and are dying to win 1 of the 2 spots on The Travel Intern Life series. I mean, who doesn’t want to travel and get paid right?
Competition will be tough with so many people applying but, if you know deep down, you’re the one for the job, we love your gusto! Here’s a couple of Travel Intern tips to keep you ahead of the game 🙂
1) Post new and multiple entries
Don’t just tag old posts with a new caption and #TheTravelIntern hashtag.
As much as we’d love to read every single entry, Instagram sorts hashtags by time and we wouldn’t be able to read your posts if it was dated many weeks ago. Help us out here.
Having multiple posts throughout the 2 week application period (3-16th Nov) also keeps your entries fresh and at the top.
2) Think visually
There’s a reason why they say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Captions are important (because your primary task as a travel blogger is still to write), but humans are visual creatures. If we don’t get drawn by your visuals, nobody is going to read your captions.
Use visuals to complement your captions. That’s what makes a good storyteller.
Insider tip: Videos have a higher chance at being seen 😉
3) Get creative
While we do our best to look through everything, it’s only human for us to miss out some that look like every other entry. Study the competition and be different.
Catch our attention by getting creative with your photos, GIFs, Boomerangs, Dubsmash, videos. Go beyond Instagram/Facebook by using different mediums. Write us an article, put together a video, get your friends, your family or even your pet involved.
The sky is the limit really. Just remember to fill up the application form before getting too carried away!
4) Complement your entries with a video
Since the focus of this internship will be the web series, we’re looking out for people who are comfortable in front of the camera — and what other way to portray that than through a video! It doesn’t even have to be super polished. Something that gives us a glimpse of what it’ll be like to have you in the team.
Edit: Feel free to include a link to your YouTube video entry! It’ll also be good to include some talking parts.
If you have a knack for putting together beautiful videos, don’t forget to include the links in the application form!
5) Highlight your strengths and personality
What are your strengths? What are you passionate about? Are you good at photography, videography, writing, or social media planning? Highlight these in your entries, show it through your posts/video editing instead of just talking about it!
6) Read the instructions carefully
The last thing you want is to be ineligible because you missed out on a small detail like not making your profile/post public. Most questions are answered in the FAQ so do study that carefully too.
There are plenty of clues to what we are looking out for in The Travel Intern Life series so make sure you address those points!
Oh yes, if you don’t have a LinkedIn account, you should probably set it up. Useful for future job applications too.
7) Writing Samples
While you’re not going to write as much as the previous interns on the 3 month programme, there will be writing tasks so if writing is your strength, don’t be afraid to show off. Include the links to your sample writing in the application form.
Show us something you wrote in your free time, on your travels, or from school. If you don’t have any means to host the content, we’ll suggest using Google Docs!
Insider Tip: Even if you don’t get selected for the series, you might still get future travel opportunities from us as writers 😉
Last but not least, you know how you look at someone’s work and go “Wah. Effort.”
Effort does shine through. So sit on it, let the creative juices run, allow your personality to shine through, let us know what is it you love so much about travel and why you’re the one up for this job.
We’ll see you on the other side, good luck! 😉
*Bonus points for those following us on Facebook, Instagram and the others (YouTube, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest) too! Puppet Master @Pohtecktoes (Facebook) will be glad too!
Most importantly, have fun applying for The Travel Intern Life!
Travel is meant to be inspiring, and above all enjoyable. While it’s important to collect content on the road, we believe that we shouldn’t let the need for that affect our travel experiences.
Good luck and we look forward to your applications.
