National Gallery exhibition Figuring a Scene - Things to do in April 2024

National Gallery exhibit Figuring a Scene - Things to do in April 2024

Instead of focusing on artworks by the artist or a historical period, Figuring a Scene is made up of artworks from different artists from the region, spanning across different eras, genres, and mediums.

This exhibit asks visitors to consider the everyday elements of nature you might not even notice – like fire, air, or shadows.

Figuring a Scene at National Gallery exhibits - Things to do in April 2024

Figuring a Scene is curated by Dr. Patrick Flores, Deputy Director of Curatorial and Research at the National Gallery Singapore. There are six different “episodes” within the exhibit, an element per episode. Dr. Flores wants exhibition-goers to draw out different interpretations based on each individual’s situation, knowledge and lived experiences.

So, if you’re looking for a fresh take on art, Figuring a Scene is definitely worth checking out!

Another new exhibition at the National Gallery is Cheong Soo Pieng: Layer by Layer, a free exhibition at the National Gallery’s Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium.

Unlike conventional art exhibitions where visitors contemplate the artworks as they are, Cheong Soo Pieng: Layer by Layer invites viewers to rediscover works by artist Cheong Soo Pieng beneath the surface, using science and technology.

National Gallery exhibit Cheong Soo Pieng Layer by Layer - Things to do in April 2024

Exhibition curator Teo Hui Min, together with conservator Dr. Diana Tay, worked with radiographers from the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to scan some of Cheong’s artworks using the hospital’s X-ray machines. Some also underwent infrared photography to reveal original sketches and elements that were covered up at a later time by the artist.

The exhibition also features interactive zones where visitors can have a more hands-on experience while learning more about the fascinating parts of unrevealing artworks. There are stations with microscopes where visitors can view mockups of Cheong’s paintings over time. One can see how paint adheres to different canvas materials that Cheong used during the different times of his life.

22) Benchmarks — a new semi-permanent public art trail in the Civic District

Jeffrey Tan sharing about Sayang! Satay Sayang! bench - Things to do in SG

Watch out for where you’re sitting the next time you’re out around town because it might just be a work of art! The Arts House Singapore just launched a brand new public art trail, Benchmarks, an alliance between the Asian Civilisations Museum, Esplanade, National Gallery Singapore, The Arts House and Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall.

Located around the Civic District, the trail features six works by Singapore-based artists, which take on unique interpretations of benches — and yes you can sit on them!

Using the term ‘benchmark’ as a point of reference for measurement and comparison, the artworks on the trail serve as markers for visitors to take a seat and reflect on the history and cultural significance of the district.

Our personal favourite is This is Note a Bench by Lua Boon Ka for its fun and humorous take on benches — plus it’s surprisingly ergonomic!

The trail begins at the Arts House but you can always flip the order and start at the Esplanade — plus, the Singapore city views are an added bonus!

Designed by international artists Gillie and Marc, the sculpture features 45 endangered species around the world like gorillas and elephants. Plus, it’s interactive too — visitors can scan QR codes on the animals to learn more about their diets, behaviours and why they’re at risk.

What used to be just a short day-trip destination is now also ready for overnight stayers. Lazarus Island will also see nine new permanent glamping tents put up near the island’s lagoon, giving visitors an alternative overnight option to the Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus, a cluster of five eco-friendly tiny houses for short-term stays.
